Will a 40 degree sleeping bag keep you warm in 20 degree weather?

No, a 40 degree sleeping bag will not keep you very warm sleeping in 20 degree weather. To sleep warm in 20 degree weather, you'll typically want a sleeping bag rated at least 15 degrees warmer.  So in this case, you would want at least a 5 degree or 0 degree sleeping bag
