The ruler that is most commonly used by physical therapists to measure range of motion is called a Goniometer. The instrument is used to measure the angle at a joint. Goniometers will show the degrees of an angle from zero to 180 or 360 degrees. Commonly used is a 12" Goniometer for measuring extension and flexion in a knee. Smaller sizes are used for measuring various other the joints in the human body.

There are various Goniometers at amazon.

There are also Gonionmeter apps now available for your iPhone.
